Primark Belfast Historic Restoration with Locharbriggs Sandstone

McMonagle Stone is proud to have played a key role in the restoration of one of Belfast’s most iconic landmarks, the Primark store at Bank Buildings. Following the devastating fire in 2018, this 237-year-old Grade B1 listed building underwent an extensive four-year restoration, culminating in its reopening on 1st November 2022.

Working alongside an expert project team, McMonagle Stone supplied high-quality natural stone to help restore the historic façade, ensuring the building’s architectural heritage was preserved for future generations.

The Brief

After the fire caused significant structural and aesthetic damage, the goal of the project was to carefully restore and conserve the original character of the historic Bank Buildings. Primark’s commitment to heritage preservation meant that every detail of the restoration needed to match the original design as closely as possible.

The project required skilled craftsmanship, precise stone matching, and high-quality materials to replicate intricate architectural features while maintaining the building’s historic integrity.

Natural Stone Solution

McMonagle Stone was delighted to be selected as the natural stone supplier, working in collaboration with Keystone Supplies, Cregg Stone Ltd, and Bennett Construction as part of the wider restoration team.

Our workshop team expertly crafted replacement stone elements using Locharbriggs Sandstone, a premium material sourced from a quarry in Scotland. This sandstone was carefully chosen for its ability to closely match the original stonework in both colour and texture.

More than 40 highly skilled stonemasons from across the UK and Ireland contributed to carving new stone features and restoring damaged sections, ensuring a seamless integration between old and new elements.
