Glenties Primary Care Centre – Mountcharles Sandstone Building Stone

The Glenties Primary Care Centre is a modern healthcare facility designed to provide essential primary care services for the people of Glenties and the surrounding areas of County Donegal. Officially opened in 2012, the centre was developed to bring a range of healthcare services together under one roof, creating a convenient and accessible healthcare hub for the local community.

For this project, McMonagle Stone supplied premium Mountcharles Sandstone Building Stone, helping to create a durable, attractive, and locally inspired exterior finish that complements the surrounding Donegal landscape.

The Brief

The Glenties Primary Care Centre was designed by Rhatigan Architects to accommodate a comprehensive range of healthcare services for the local population. The architectural vision called for a building that would be functional, welcoming, and sympathetic to its rural setting.

A key requirement was the use of high-quality natural stone that would provide long-term durability while reflecting the character of traditional Donegal architecture. The project was constructed by Boyle Construction.

Natural Stone Solution

McMonagle Stone supplied Mountcharles Sandstone - Machined, a natural sandstone renowned for its warm tones, robust performance, and timeless appearance.

The stone was selected for its ability to:

  • Blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
  • Enhance the architectural character of the building.
  • Provide a durable, low-maintenance external finish.
  • Deliver a natural and authentic aesthetic.
  • Support the use of locally sourced materials within the project.

The sandstone's rich texture and colour variation contribute to a welcoming and professional healthcare environment while ensuring the building remains visually appealing for decades to come.

Benefits of Mountcharles Sandstone - Machined

  • Exceptional Durability - Mountcharles Sandstone is highly resistant to weathering, making it ideal for public and healthcare buildings exposed to Ireland’s changing climate.
  • Timeless Appearance - The natural colour variation and texture of the stone create a distinctive façade that ages beautifully over time.
  • Sustainable Choice - As a natural material sourced locally within Donegal, Mountcharles Sandstone helps reduce transportation impacts while supporting regional craftsmanship and construction.
  • Low Maintenance - Natural sandstone requires minimal upkeep, making it a practical solution for healthcare and commercial developments.

Project Outcome

The completed Glenties Primary Care Centre successfully delivers modern healthcare facilities within a building that respects its local context. The use of Mountcharles Sandstone Building Stone adds character, durability, and a strong connection to the architectural heritage of County Donegal.

More than a decade after opening, the centre continues to serve the community while showcasing the lasting quality and aesthetic appeal of natural stone construction.
