Donegal Town Credit Union – Mountcharles Sandstone & Irish Blue Limestone

Completed in 2016, the Donegal Town Credit Union building is a standout example of contemporary Irish architecture rooted in local identity and craftsmanship. This award-winning project was commended in the 2016 Natural Stone Awards, recognised for its innovative design, high-quality construction, and thoughtful use of natural materials.

McMonagle Stone was proud to supply a combination of Mountcharles Sandstone and Irish Blue Limestone, helping to create a distinctive building that reflects both the heritage and future of the local community.

The Brief

Creatively designed by McCabe Architects, the design brief centred on creating a building that would embody the values and identity of Donegal Town Credit Union while strengthening its connection to the local community.

The structure needed to reflect its geographical setting and incorporate subtle references to the region’s nautical heritage. At the same time, the client sought a bold, contemporary architectural statement—one that would feel grounded in the landscape while symbolising stability, trust, and growth.

A key objective was to design a building that would visually “anchor” the Credit Union within the town, using locally sourced materials and exceptional craftsmanship.

Natural Stone Solution

To bring this vision to life, McMonagle Stone supplied a carefully selected range of premium Irish natural stone products, combining traditional materials with modern architectural detailing.

Products Supplied

  • Mountcharles Sandstone Ashlar Cladding
  • Mountcharles Sandstone Quoins
  • Irish Blue Limestone Cladding (40mm thickness)
  • Irish Blue Limestone Paving

The locally quarried Mountcharles Sandstone was used extensively for the external walls, providing warmth, texture, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Irish Blue Limestone, rich in natural fossils, was incorporated at key architectural points including the entrance and internal flooring, adding contrast and visual interest.

Product Benefits

  • Locally Sourced Irish Stone - Mountcharles Sandstone, quarried in Co. Donegal, offers an authentic and sustainable building material that reflects the local environment and heritage.
  • Distinctive Architectural Character - The combination of warm sandstone and fossil-rich limestone creates a striking contrast, enhancing the building’s contemporary yet grounded design.
  • Exceptional Craftsmanship - Precision-cut ashlar cladding and detailed stonework ensure a high-end finish that meets the demands of modern architectural standards.
  • Durability & Longevity - Both sandstone and limestone provide excellent performance, making them ideal for commercial buildings requiring long-term durability and low maintenance.
  • Strong Sense of Place - The use of indigenous materials reinforces the building’s connection to its surroundings and the community it serves.

Project Outcome

The completed Donegal Town Credit Union building successfully delivers a unique and meaningful architectural statement. Its bold design, combined with the use of locally sourced natural stone, creates a structure that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in its environment.

The project has not only achieved critical recognition but has also delivered measurable success for the client. Within just four months of opening, the Credit Union experienced a 25% increase in membership and a 23% rise in loan activity—demonstrating the positive impact that thoughtful design and quality materials can have on a community-focused organisation.

Today, this project stands as a powerful example of how natural stone can be used to create buildings that are functional, visually striking, and deeply connected to their place.
