Primark - The Bank Buildings Wins Prestigious Natural Stone Award 2024
We are delighted to announce that the restoration of Primark – The Bank Buildings in Belfast has been awarded the Natural Stone Award 2024! This prestigious accolade recognises the outstanding craftsmanship, meticulous planning, and dedication that went into reviving one of Belfast’s most historic landmarks.
A Historic Restoration
Originally constructed in 1785 and later transformed in 1899 by architect WH Lynn, the Bank Buildings have long been an architectural icon in Belfast. However, tragedy struck in 2018 when a fire severely damaged the Grade B1 Listed building. What followed was a four-year meticulous restoration project, culminating in its grand reopening on 1 November 2022.
The Role of Natural Stone
A key component of the restoration was the sourcing of 1136 tonnes of Locharbriggs Red Sandstone from the original quarry in Scotland. McMonagle Stone, in collaboration with Keystone Supplies, Cregg Stone Ltd, and Bennett Construction, played a pivotal role in providing and shaping the stone elements required for the project. In addition to the sandstone, Balmoral Granite was also used to restore the building to its original grandeur.
Unparalleled Craftsmanship
The restoration was one of the largest and most complex ever undertaken in Northern Ireland, requiring the expertise of over 46 skilled stonemasons. Every stone was carefully assessed, restored, or replaced using advanced techniques such as CNC machining and traditional hand-carving. Notable aspects of the restoration included:
-
The complete reconstruction of the 6th floor, clock, and side arch
-
Repair and replacement of over 90 windows and 7-metre columns
-
The careful restoration of a 7-metre-wide monumental arch
-
Installation of 200 square metres of new stone at the shopfronts
Innovation & Sustainability
Despite challenges, including pandemic restrictions and handling stones weighing up to 3 tonnes, the project maintained a commitment to sustainability. Measures such as:
-
Repurposing old stones from the building
-
Water conservation through rain harvesting and filtration systems
-
Reusing stone pallets to reduce waste helped minimise environmental impact.
A Symbol of Belfast’s Resilience
Restoring Primark – The Bank Buildings was about more than preserving a structure—it was about revitalising a city landmark, showcasing skilled craftsmanship, and celebrating Belfast’s rich architectural heritage. This project stands as a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration, dedication, and respect for history.
We are incredibly proud to have played a role in this remarkable achievement and to be recognised with the Natural Stone Award 2024. This award is a tribute to everyone involved in bringing this historic building back to life, ensuring it remains a cherished part of Belfast’s cityscape for generations to come.
