Aran Sweater Market, Galway Wins Heritage & Conservation Award

McMonagle Stone is delighted to share that ACP (Architectural Conservation Professionals) , Tobin Consulting Engineers, and Duane Construction were awarded the Heritage & Conservation Award at the 2018 Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards, held on Friday 9th November.

Sponsored by the Office of Public Works, the award recognises the outstanding restoration work carried out on the Aran Sweater Market project in Galway City between August 2017 and July 2018.

The building had been derelict for over 10 years, falling into a state of disrepair before being purchased with a vision to restore it as a vibrant commercial space. In collaboration with Galway City Council, the National Monuments Service, and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the ACP-led team developed a careful restoration strategy to return this historically significant structure—part medieval and part 19th century—to its former condition.

Working closely with the project team, McMonagle Stone’s workshop played a key role in the restoration by crafting bespoke Irish Blue Limestone window and door surrounds, designed to replicate the original architectural detailing. Given the extent of deterioration, recreating these elements required exceptional skill, precision, and an understanding of traditional stone masonry techniques dating back to the 13th century.
