    What You’ll Need

    • Stepping stones
    • Sharp sand or sand/cement mix
    • Spade or turf cutter
    • Rubber mallet
    • Spirit level

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Lay Stepping Stones

Step 1: Plan & Position Your Stepping Stones

Lay out your stepping stones across the lawn to create your desired pathway. Ensure they are spaced evenly and comfortably for walking—typically one natural step apart.

Step 2: Mark & Remove the Turf

Use each stepping stone as a template to mark its position. Carefully cut around it and remove the turf to a depth of approximately 75mm.

    Step 3: Prepare the Base

Fill the excavated area with 30–35mm of sharp sand, or use a semi-dry mix of 5 parts sand to 1 part cement for extra stability. Level the base to ensure an even surface.

Step 4: Lay the Stepping Stones

Place each stone into position and gently tap it down using a rubber mallet. Adjust until the stone sits just below the level of the surrounding lawn for a seamless finish.

    Step 5: Finishing Touches

Check alignment and stability, then brush soil or sand around the edges to secure each stone. Lightly water the area if using a sand/cement mix.

    Tips for Best Results

    • Keep spacing consistent for a natural walking rhythm
    • Use a spirit level to ensure stones are even
    • Avoid placing stones too high above ground level to prevent tripping
    • Consider curving the path for a more organic garden design
