How to Clean & Maintain Natural Stone Paving – DIY Care Guide

To maintain the appearance and longevity of your natural stone paving, regular cleaning and basic maintenance are essential. We recommend keeping paved areas free from leaves, soil, and organic debris to prevent staining and reduce the build-up of moss and algae.

For best results, natural stone paving should be cleaned at least twice a year, with special attention during autumn and early spring.

    1. General Dirt & Everyday Cleaning

For routine cleaning, use simple and gentle methods:

    • Sweep regularly to remove loose debris
    • Scrub with a stiff brush and hot water
    • Use a chemical-free mild soap where needed

Using a Pressure Washer (If Required)

Pressure washing should be used carefully to avoid damaging joints or the stone surface:

    • Always remove loose debris first
    • Test a small, inconspicuous area before full cleaning
    • Use medium pressure only
    • Hold the lance at a maximum 30° angle
    • Never aim directly into joints or grout lines
    • Replace any jointing material that is removed during cleaning

    2. Removing Oil Stains

Oil stains should be treated immediately for the best chance of removal.

    Step-by-step:

    1. Blot excess oil using kitchen roll or a dry cloth
    2. Apply an absorbent material such as talcum powder, cat litter, or chalk dust
    3. Leave for 24 hours to draw out the stain
    4. Repeat if necessary until the stain fades

If staining persists, the affected slab may need to be replaced. In many cases, a less visible slab from another area of the patio can be swapped in.

    3. Heavy Staining & Deep Cleaning

For stubborn stains, proprietary cleaning products are available from specialist suppliers and DIY stores.

    However:

    • Many are acid-based and may damage natural stone
    • Always test on a small area first
    • Follow manufacturer instructions carefully

Where possible, seek professional advice before using strong chemical cleaners.

    4. Weeds, Moss & Lichen Control

Organic growth should be treated early to prevent spread:

    • Treat weeds and grass with an appropriate weed killer
    • Use a fungicide or algaecide for moss and lichen
    • Apply treatments during dry conditions for best results
    • Regular maintenance in spring and autumn is recommended

Consistent cleaning is far more effective than heavy occasional treatment.

    5. Sealing Natural Stone Paving

Sealers can help protect certain types of natural stone from staining and weathering.

    • A range of suitable stone sealers is available from McMonagle Stone
    • Always check product compatibility with your stone type
    • Follow manufacturer guidelines carefully
    • Be aware that sealing may slightly alter the appearance or colour of the stone
