The Wall House - Shortlisted for the Building and Architect of the Year Awards 2018
The Wall House is a striking contemporary residential project designed by Niall Smith Architects, located in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan. Inspired by Ireland’s rural landscape, the home seamlessly blends natural stone with modern architectural design.
McMonagle Stone supplied a range of premium materials for this award-nominated project, helping to create a cohesive connection between interior and exterior living spaces.
The Brief
The design vision centred on creating a modern home rooted in its natural surroundings. Niall Smith sought to:
- Integrate the structure with the rural Irish landscape
- Use natural stone as a defining architectural feature
- Create fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces
- Maximise natural light and spatial openness
A key requirement was the use of high-quality stone and paving materials that would enhance both the visual impact and durability of the home.
Natural Stone Solution
McMonagle Stone supplied Grey Sandstone Walling, Architectural Blue Limestone Wall Capping, and Moov Grey 600 x 600 x 20mm Porcelain Tiles to bring the vision to life.
The home is defined by a series of dry-built Grey Sandstone walls, which divide the property into multiple internal and external zones. These walls extend through the house, creating a strong architectural narrative, with a standout feature being the cantilevered staircase emerging effortlessly from the stone in the double-height entrance.
Externally, the sandstone walls are finished with sleek Blue Limestone capping, providing a refined contrast while enhancing durability. Expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing connects the interior to three outdoor terraces, expertly paved by Ciaran Burke using contemporary Moov Grey porcelain tiles, extending the living space beyond the footprint of the house.
Product Benefits
- Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living - Porcelain paving and natural stone walling create a cohesive flow between interior and exterior spaces.
- Architectural Impact - Grey Sandstone walling delivers strong visual structure, adding depth and character to the design.
- Durability & Performance - Porcelain tiles and limestone capping offer excellent weather resistance, ideal for the Irish climate.
- Contemporary Aesthetic - Moov Grey porcelain tiles provide a clean, modern finish that complements both glass and natural stone.
