Aran Sweater Market, Quay Street, Galway City
The Aran Sweater Market restoration on Quay Street in Galway City is a landmark conservation project that brought one of the city’s oldest stone buildings—dating back to the early 13th century—back to life.
Led by Architectural Conservation Professionals , Tobin Consulting Engineers and delivered by Duane Construction, the project transformed a long-derelict structure into a vibrant retail space while preserving its rich architectural heritage.
The Brief
The building, which had been derelict for over a decade, required a highly sensitive restoration approach. Working alongside Galway City Council, the National Monuments Service, and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the project team set out to:
- Restore the structure to its original medieval and 19th-century form
- Preserve historically significant features, including two-metre-thick stone walls
- Integrate modern retail functionality within a heritage setting
- Ensure all materials and finishes were historically accurate
A key challenge was replicating intricate architectural stone დეტailing in line with traditional masonry techniques.
Natural Stone Solution
McMonagle Stone supplied Architectural Irish Blue Limestone Window and Door Surrounds, expertly crafted to match the original historic detailing.
Working closely with Architectural Conservation Professionals, the stone was carefully recreated in-house to reflect the craftsmanship of 13th-century stonemasons. Each piece required exceptional precision, as the original surrounds were severely damaged and required faithful restoration.
The finished limestone elements seamlessly integrate with the existing structure, preserving authenticity while enhancing the building’s visual integrity. Behind glass, sections of the original stone walls remain visible, allowing visitors to experience the building’s history firsthand.
